The Ice House served the residents of
Batsto Mansion as a way to keep food cold during the warm seasons. Slabs
of ice were cut from Batsto Lake with huge saws, then stored in the Ice
House, which is dug out approximately 20 feet below ground level. Packed
with sawdust, the ice kept meat, butter and other dairy products cool
year-round.
