The Batsto Lake and River were the major reasons for the location of the village and Iron Furnace. The rivers were a source for bog ore, and the lake created by the dam allowed boats to move bog iron from rivers and streams to the Iron Furnace. The lake also provided water power for the Sawmill and Gristmill.
Fishing and canoeing are permitted on the Batsto Lake. The nearby Nature Center has eight canoes available for guided nature trips.
